Seminary: 98 Mormon 9

Background: Moroni is the last surviving Nephite and is in hiding finishing the Book Mormon.

Write: Peaceful, Uneasy

Read situationals:

• Joshua is fifteen years old. Many of his friends of the same age have dates for an upcoming school activity and are encouraging him to get a date as well.

• Jose attends an area conference where the prophet speaks. Afterward he is invited to the stand to shake hands with the prophet.

• Fiona is attending a party with her friends. One of her friends invites the group to watch a video with lots of profanity and crude jokes.

• Yves loves sports, but a member of his team swears every time someone makes a mistake in a game.

• Kamau is the high school debate president. After his team wins a debate away from home, some of his friends break out some alcohol to celebrate and ask him to join them.

What can influence people to feel differently in the same setting?

Can people change how they feel about situations?

Isaiah 6:1, 5-7

How did Isaiah feel when he was brought into the presence of God?

Alma 36:12-14

How is Alma’s experience like what Isaiah describes?

If a prophet like Isaiah felt unworthy to be in the Lord’s presence how do you think the wicked would feel?

Alma 36:18-20

What happened to help Alma to feel joy?

Mormon 9:1-2

Who is Moroni speaking to in these verses?

Mormon 9:3-4

How would the wicked feel to be in the presence of the Lord?

Doctrine and Covenants 88:27-33

Why wouldn’t some people be comfortable to be in the presence of the Lord?

In what ways do these verses show the Lord’s mercy?

What can we do to feel more worthy to be in the presence of the Lord?

Elder Lorenzo Snow:

“God loves His offering, the human family….He loves them all and His plans are for the salvation of the whole, and He will bring all up into that position in which they will be as happy and as comfortable as they are willing to be” (The Teachings of Lorenzo Snow, comp. Clyde J. Williams [1984], 91).
What is a miracle?

What are some of the miracles that are noted in the scriptures?

Do miracles happen today?

Have any of you witnessed a miracle?

What principles of the gospel need to be present for miracles to occur? (Faith and many cases prayer and priesthood power.)

In what ways has the Holy Ghost comforted, warned, or taught you?

What are some of God’s miracles that are all around us? (birth, creation of the earth, restoration of the gospel, patriarchal blessings…)

Mormon 9:21, 27-28

How can having faith in Jesus Christ, not doubting, and living righteously help prepare you to receive miracles?

Seminary: 97 Mormon 8

Background: The final battle came and all but Moroni were killed. The Lamanites also hunted down the Nephites that escaped to the south and killed them.

Write: “Real courage includes standing against the evil one, even when we stand alone, often feeling the disdain and the ridicule of others. This is courage. This is strength. This is manhood, and it can be tough” (Bishop Richard C. Edgley, Ensign, Nov. 1999, 42).

Have any of you ever felt alone, either physically or emotionally?

How did that feeling affect you?

Does it feel different to be alone physically versus being surrounded by people and being alone emotionally? What are the differences?

Is one harder than the other?

Does having a friend help even if it is only one person?

How would it feel when that person is gone and you are alone again?

Now imagine those feelings and add to it that you just saw a majority of your people killed in front of you and those people are looking for you trying to kill you and everything you believe in.

Would there be any temptation to give up and let them find you?

What if you were given a commandment to fulfill?

This was Moroni’s situation. He was the last of his people left to finish the work that his father started and having to hide and move constantly in order to do it.

What was the task that he was given by his Father and the Lord?

Mormon 8:12

What are the “greater things” that Moroni testifies that we can learn?

Mormon 8:16

Who is Moroni talking about in this verse? (Joseph Smith)

What does he mean that it, the Book or Mormon, will shine forth out of darkness? (“shine is a symbol referencing the Spirit which was used through the Urim and Thummin to translate the plates).

Moroni 8:17

What faults could there be in this work?

In saying that “God knoweth all things” what is he encouraging people to do if they find fault in this work?

What does “condemn” mean? (To express an unfavorable or adverse judgment on; indicate strong disapproval of; censure-dictionary.com).

So what doe sit mean to condemn something?

What is “hell”?

Moroni said, “he that condemeth, let him be aware lest he shall be in danger of hell fire.”

What does this mean?

Mormon 8:21

What does “strife” mean? (Vigorous or bitter conflict, discord, or antagonism-dictionary.com)

What does wrath mean? (strong, stern, or fierce anger; deeply resentful indignation; ire).

What does it mean to “breath out wrath and strife against the work of the Lord”?

What power does Satan control? (contention)

By raising contention you are putting yourself in the power of Satan and thus your eternal state is in jeopardy.

What does Moroni mean by saying “hewn down and cast into the fire”? (agricultural reference)

Seminary: 96 Mormon 6-7

Background: Mormon preached to the Nephites to try to get them to repent and rebuild the church of God. In frustration that they would not change he refused to be their military leader and went to organize the records Ammaron had passed on to him in order to build the abridgment that would later become the Book or Mormon. He saw that the Nephites continued in their wickedness and were being destroyed. He changed his mind and decided to lead the Nephites again in hopes that he might be able to help them.

The Lamanites had won many battles against the Nephites and were more numerous than. Mormon wrote a message to the King of the Lamanites to request that they would allow the Nephites to gather together in one body at the hill of Cumorah.

At this point Moroni was about 74 years old. He saw no salvation for his people.

Imagine that you are old and struggled your whole life to convince your people to be obedient and they would not listen. Add to this scenario that your people have an enemy that is more numerous and they surround your lands and want to eliminate your whole people.

What would you be feeling?

Moroni 6:6

In view of the doom of his people, what was his greatest concern?

Why was this important to him?

The king of the Lamanites permitted the Nephites to gather together in one body.

Why do you suppose he would allow this?

Mormon 6:7-8

How were the Nephites feeling?

Why did they feel this way?

About how many Nephites do you think there were? (about 23,000, about the number of people who live in Live Oak and Universal City together).

The Lamanites came to battle with the Nephites.

When the Lamanites withdrew for the day, all of the Nephites that had not escaped were killed save 24 which included Mormon and his son Moroni.

Mormon takes a few verses to lament his fallen people. He uses the term “fair ones” as a reference to his people.

What do you think he means by this reference?

He ends his musings with this verse.

Mormon 6:22

What does this verse mean?

This event was only 10 years from the time that the Lord promised Mormon they would be saved if they repented.

What would have happened if the Nephites had repented?

The Lord gave them a 10 year window to repent and come back to him.

How does this scenario apply to us?

How much time does he give us do you think?

Let’s suppose that you know that you are about to die along with all of your people. You have a chance to leave a message for children of the people that destroyed you what would you say to them?

Seminary: 95 Mormon 3-5

Background: At the age of 16 Mormon was made the leader of the Nephite armies. There are mighty wars and many of the Nephites were killed and the people are in a state of mourning.

What was the state of the Nephite nation at this time? (wicked, they gloried in sinning and the destruction of their brethren).

What do we know about Mormon up to this point? (He was asked to keep the records by Ammaron at the age of 10, at the age of 16 he was made the leader of the Nephite armies, he was righteous).

Who did Mormon have stewardship over?

Who does he have a right to receive revelation for?

Mormon 3:2

What did the Lord tell Mormon?

What was the state of the “church” at this point in time? (“…build up again…”)

What do you think Mormon was feeling after this? How would you feel?

Mormon 3:3

What did Mormon do?

How did the people respond?

Mormon was about 50 years old at this time. He had spent all of his days leading, protecting, praying for and preaching to his people. All the while he has watched them spiral down in to more and more wickedness.

Now how do you think he felt? How would you feel?

Mormon 3:10

What action did he take?

While Mormon is standing on the sidelines watching and chronicling the history of the Nephites he sees his people falling into destruction.

Mormon 5:1-2

What decision did Mormon make?

What was his feelings about his decision? (“he was without hope”)

Why do you think he made this decision?

Wars continued and many were killed.

Mormon 5:8-9

What does abridgment mean?

“A shortened or condensed form of a book, speech, etc., that still retains the basic contents” (dictionary.com)
What is the abridgment that Mormon referenced?

Why did he write did he write the abridgement?

• That a knowledge of these things (the destruction of the Nephites)

Why did he dare not to give a full account? (because of the commandments which he had received)

Why would the Lord command him not to provide a full account of the things that he has seen?

In speaking about the abridgment that Mormon would make the Lord told Mormon: Mormon 5:13-15

What is the intent that the Lord wants these words to be used for?

• That the unbelieving may be persuaded that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God
• That the Father may bring about his great and eternal purpose in restoring the house of Israel to the land of their inheritance to fulfill his covenant.

Seminary: Scripture Baseball Game

We played a game that I call scripture baseball.  I made some cards that had practical applications for the scripture mastery scriptures.  I drew a picture of a baseball diamond on the board.  I divided the class up into two teams.  Each team would have a batting order.  When the next batter came up I would read the practical application with the a,b,c options for them to select.  If they got the right option then they would roll a 6 sided die; 1= single, 2=double, 3=triple, 4=homerun, 5=popfly out, 6=ground out.  Once the team received three outs then it was the next team's turn.

Seminary: 94 3 Nephi 26

Background: The Lord was teaching the Nephites the words of Isaiah and Malachi in regards to the events prior to the second coming.

Write: “That which is of God is light; and her that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light growth brighter and brighter until the perfect day” (D&C 50:24)

What do you think this verse means?

Why is it important to receive “more light”?

What do you think the phrase “continueth in God” means?

Why do you have to be obedient to the light you have before you can receive more?

D&C 93:12-14, 19-20, 27-28

How do these verses add to our understanding of this verse on the board?

Think of examples where a person progressed from something basic to something more advanced.

3 Nephi 26:3-6

What did the Savior teach or expound to the Nephites?

3 Nephi 26:8

What portion of His teachings are included in 3 Nephi?

Why do you think Mormon included these teachings?

How have the Savior’s teachings in 3 Nephi helped you out?

3 Nephi 26:9-12

What part of the Savior’s teachings to the Nephites are included in the Book or Mormon?

Why did the Lord say the other teachings were held back?

Will we ever receive the parts that were held back?

What must we do first?

Joseph Fielding McConkie:

“’I will try the faith of my people,’ the Lord said. This is not some cruel game that God plays with mankind. It is, rather, an act of love and mercy for us. For our own sake-our spiritual development and salvation-the Savior expects us to develop faith and righteousness by trusting in and following the teachings of the portions of his word that he has already revealed-as in our standard works and in the words of prophets and Apostles of our dispensation. He desires us to study, ponder, pray about, and heed those teachings we have so that we will desire more and be spiritual prepared to have ‘greater things’ manifest to us” (Joseph Fielding McConkie and others, Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon: Volume IV-Third Nephi through Moroni [1992], 170).
Elder Neal A. Maxwell:

“Just as there will be many more Church members, families, wards, stakes, and temples-later on, there will also be many more nourishing and inspiring scriptures. However, we must first feast worthily upon that which we already have!” (Ensign, Nov. 1986, 52).
Spiritual experiences are sacred and should not be shared except as directed by the Spirit.

Elder Boyd K. Packer:

“Occasionally during the past year I have been asked a question. Usually it comes as a curious, almost an idle, question about the qualifications to stand as a witness for Christ. The questions they ask is, ‘Have you seen Him?”

“That is a question that I have never asked of another. I have not asked that question of my brethren in the Quorum.”
How do you feel about the question Elder Packer was asked?

Why do you think Elder Packer would never ask that question of another person?

Elder Packer continued:

“That is a question that I have never asked of another…,thinking that it would be so sacred and so personal that one would have to have some special inspiration, indeed, some authorization, even to ask it.

“There are some things just too sacred to discuss. We know that as it related to the temples. In our temples, sacred ordinances are performed; sacred experiences are enjoyed. And yet we do not, because of the nature of them, discuss them outside those sacred walls.

“It is not that they are secret, but they are sacred; not to be discussed, but to be harbored and to be protected and regarded with the deepest of reverence.

“I have come to know what the prophet Alma meant:

“’…It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God; nevertheless they are laid under a strict command that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him.

“’And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full.’ (Al. 12:9-10)” (Ensign, June 1971, 87).

Seminary: 93 3 Nephi 24-25

Background: Jesus taught the Nephites about how the Gentiles will accept the gospel and will be the vehicle to gather in scattered Israel in the last days.

Pass out worksheet: Malachi in the Book of Mormon (3 Nephi 24-25) (link to file).

Review worksheet with class.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Seminary: 92 3 Nephi 22-23

Background: Jesus gave the Nephites the sacrament for the second time and taught them that they will be scattered, or fall out of the covenant, but will be gathered later by the gentiles who receive the gospel.

The Lord then quotes some of Isaiah’s writings that coincide with what the He taught the Nephites. (3 Nephi 22, Isaiah 54)

Mosiah 8:13, 15-17

What does it mean to be a seer?

What is the difference between a seer and a prophet?

How valuable is the gift of seership?

What value should the words of a seer have for you?

Have any of you ever met a seer? (Patriarch for our stake is Patriarch William Call)

What value does a Patriarchal blessing have for you?

Are you familiar with what yours says?

Isaiah was a seer that saw our time. His writings give us much insight into events that will transpire in our day.

3 Nephi 23:1-5

What did the Savior command us to do with Isaiah’s words?

Why do you think it would be important to search them?

Does knowing that he was a seer motivate you to study his words?

Write: Journal, scriptures, pedigree charts, family group sheet, scrapbook, family history.

What do these items have in common?

Why is keeping records important?

How can what was written in the past help us today?

How might it help us in the future?

3 Nephi 23:6-11

What did the Lord command Samuel the Lamanite to testify to the people?

Why do you think it would be important for people in the future to know if this prophecy had been fulfilled?

What did the Lord command Nephi to do at this point?

Have the students ponder: When was the last time that they felt the Spirit.

• Where were they

• What time was it

• What were they doing

• Who were they with

Testify and encourage about the use of keeping journals.

Seminary: 91 3 Nephi 20-21

Background: Jesus instituted the sacrament. The Twelve Disciples ministered unto the people teaching and baptizing them.

How often do you need to eat?

How long can a person go without eating?

What happens if you do not eat enough?

What happens if you eat the wrong things?

How often do you need spiritual nourishment?

What happens if you nourish your spirit with the wrong things?

How does spiritual nourishment help you?

3 Nephi 20:3-9

What event happened in these verses?

When was the last time they had taken the sacrament? (the previous day)

What do you think would be the value in partaking of the Sacrament so soon?

What ordinance does the Sacrament renew? (baptism)

Many of the people were not baptized when they first received the Sacrament so this was their first renewal of their baptismal covenants.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks:

“To those brothers and sisters who may have allowed themselves to become lax in this vital renewal of the covenants of the sacrament, I plead in words of the First Presidency that you ‘come back and feast at the table of the Lord, and taste again the sweet and satisfying fruits of fellowship with the saints’ (‘An Invitation to Come Back,’ Church News, 22 Dec. 1985, 3). Let us qualify ourselves for our Savior’s promise that by partaking of the sacrament we will ‘be filled’ (3 Nephi 20:8; see also 3 Nephi 18:9), which means that we will be ‘filled with the Spirit’ (3 Nephi 20:9). That Spirit-the Holy Ghost-is our comforter, our direction finder, our communicator, our interpreter, our witness, and our purifier-our infallible guide and sanctifier for our mortal journey toward eternal life.

“Any who may have thought it a small thing to partake of the sacrament should remember the Lord’s declaration that the foundation of a great work is laid by small things, for ‘out of small things proceedeth that which is great’ (D&C 64:33). Out of the seemingly small act of consciously and reverently renewing our baptismal covenants comes a renewal of the blessings of baptism by water and by the Spirit, that we may always have His Spirit, that we may always have His Spirit to be with us. In this way all of us will be guided, and in this way all of us can be cleaned” (Ensign, Nov. 1996, 61).
How do you think that life would be different if they were not able to take the Sacrament each week?

After the Lord gave them the sacrament, he proceeded to teach them that they are of the House of Israel.

What does ‘House of Israel’ mean?

Who belongs to it?

What is the Abrahamic Covenant?

What role do the Gentiles have in gathering the scattered Israel?

The Lord taught the Nephites that they House of Israel will have a falling away. The Gentiles will receive the gospel and will join the House of Israel and will be the vehicle of gathering the scattered Israel back into the covenant.

Seminary: 90 3 Nephi 19

Background: Christ taught the Nephites about the Sacrament and prayer. He also talked about how the sacrament and prayer can help us to have the spirit more fully in our lives.

Do you remember how many people the Lord had been teaching up to this point? (about 2,500)

We had talked about how he had sent the people home to prepare for his next message for them.

Imagine that you were to see the Savior tomorrow.

What emotions would you be feeling?

Would you want to tell others about His visit?

If you could, who would you invite to be there with you?

3 Nephi 19:1-3

How did the Nephites handle this scenario?

Who did they tell about the Savior’s visit?

How did they react?

Read: 3 Nephi 19:4-15

What preparations did they make?

• They followed the leaders Jesus had chosen.

• They prayed.

• They taught and learned the words that Jesus had previously spoken.

• They were baptized.

• They desired and received the Holy Ghost.

How could following this pattern help us prepare for the Second Coming of the Lord?

How does desire affect our ability to prepare for the Second Coming of the Lord?

Share testimony of the Savior and the need to prepare for His Second Coming.

Prayer is an important aspect of developing a relationship with the Lord.

Discuss:

• Use reverent titles and pronouns while praying (such as Thee, Thou, Thy, and Thine).

• Follow the basic pattern when praying (Our Heavenly Father, we thank Thee….We ask Thee….In the name of Jesus Christ, amen).

• Pray from the heart.

• Pray regularly (every morning and night).

• Pray as directed by the Holy Ghost.

President Ezra Taft Benson:

“If we would advance in holiness-increase in favor with God-nothing can take the place of prayer….Give prayer-daily prayer, secret prayer-a foremost place in your lives. Let no day pass without it. Communion with the Almighty has been a source of strength, inspiration, and enlightenment through the world’s history to men and women who have shaped the destinies of individuals and nations for good” (God, Family, Country: Our Three Great Loyalties [1974], 8).
Testify of the power of prayer and the need to pray daily.

To whom do we pray?

Elder Bruce R. McConkie:

“Jesus was present before them as the symbol of the Father. Seeing him, it was as though they saw the Father; praying to him, it was as though they prayed to the Father. It was a special and unique situation that as far as we know has taken place only once on earth during all the long ages of the Lord’s hand-dealings with this children. (The Promised Messiah: The first Coming of Christ [1978], 561).
In whose name do we pray?

What does that mean, “in whose name”?

Why do we pray to the Father in the name of the Christ?

Seminary: 88 3 Nephi 17

Background: In the last days the gospel will go to the gentiles and then to the house of Israel, missionary work.

Write: dinner, soccer game, math test, date with a friend, school, mission call, temple marriage, taking the sacrament, receiving revelation.

Write: Preparation precedes power.

Is this statement true? Why?

How does this statement apply to these events?

Why is it important to receive revelation?

How should do you prepare to receive revelation?

What might happen if you do not prepare?

3 Nephi 17:1-2

What does the Lord saying to the people?

3 Nephi 17:3

What were the four instructions that the Savior gave to them?
1. Go to their homes

2. Ponder upon the things which he said

3. Ask the Father in his name that they may understand

4. Prepare their minds for the next day

Why do you think that being home would be helpful in their preparation?

What does “ponder” mean? (to consider something deeply and thoroughly; meditate).

What does “meditate” mean? (to engage in thought or contemplation; reflect).

How does pondering and meditation help us to prepare for revelation?

How do these relate to prayer?

How does prayer fit into the process of receiving revelation?

Who is familiar with the story of the first vision?

What events lead up to the appearance of God the Father and Jesus Christ?

What is similar to the events in the story of the first vision and what Christ told the Nephites to do?

Continue to study, and pray so that you may receive revelations as to the truthfulness of the Gospel.

Sister Anne. G Wirthlin:

“The Savior has given us a pattern to follow as we study the scriptures. We hear the word, we ponder upon its meaning, we ask our Heavenly Father to help us understand, and then our minds and hearts are prepared to receive the promised blessings. Pondering, is more than reading words; it is searching for meanings that will help us as we relate to one another and as we make choices in our lives. It is allowing the word to move from our minds to our hearts. The Spirit bears witness to our hearts as we prayerfully seek to know the things of our Heavenly Father. When we have that witness and knowledge, we think and live and relate to each other in more Christlike ways” (Ensigni, May 1998, 10).
Think of someone you admire because of the way that they treat others.

Who did you choose?

How has this person been a positive influence in the Church, school or community?

Why do you think that treating other compassionately is so important?

Is there a time that a person has shown you extreme compassion or kindness?

How did that impact you?

Is there a time that a person mistreated or ignored you?

How did that impact you?

This chapter talks about how the Savior spent time among the Nephites personally teaching and strengthening them
